Purpose of the Job    

The Political Risks team is recruiting for a Political Violence Underwriter to join a profitable and growing business line. The role will have both personal and collective responsibility for helping support the expansion and profitability of this portfolio as the team is positioned for significant growth. The position involves the underwriting of business in line with War, Terrorism and Political Violence appetite as well as developing and maintaining relationships with London and International Brokers and clients.

Job Responsibilities & Competence
  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet planned underwriting results, through proactive account review, analysis of underwriting trends and improvement plans to maintain profitability. 
  • Negotiate account participation, pricing and terms and conditions with brokers.
  • Underwrite in line with Underwriting Authorities, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles.
  • Support development and execution of the PV&T underwriting and marketing strategies, delivering growth strategy to London based brokers.
  • Awareness and development of new products and geographic territories for expansion of the Political Risks book without losing focus on profitability.
  • Proactively support retention of existing business through both market and one-on-one meetings with our Insureds / potential Insureds.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key Brokers & Insured’s. This is to include both UK and potential overseas travel on behalf of the team.
  • Supporting other team members with training and developing Junior Underwriters to continually improve their technical and trading capability with an overall objective to development a market leading team
  • To contribute, as required, to the periodic reporting of Underwriting results
  • Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued and filing is maintained through a close working relationship with Operations and Aggregate Modelling teams

  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Adhere to any common standards set across the company and ensures that policies and procedures are adequately documented. 
  • Undertake continued Professional Development and comply with The Business procedures

In line with applicants experience and technical level.  Expected to be responsible and confident to refer business in the event of uncertainty; price, territory or wordings.  This is reflected in the individual continual development.

Qualifications and Capabilities
  • Reasonable standard of education
  • Willingness to broaden and develop knowledge of PVT, Credit and Political Risks and Aviation War, and related issues through formal and informal learning
  • Ability to prioritise and organise workload and meeting deadlines and that of the team
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with internal and external customers
  • Sufficient knowledge, interest and understanding of Global Current Affairs (social, political, and economic)
Educational Requirements
  • Degree level or other equivalent qualification preferred.
Experience (describe relevant work experience, if required)
  • 2 -7 years underwriting experience within the PV&T and/or Aviation War marketplace.
  • Sound understanding of the insurance market with detailed knowledge of political violence and/or aviation war insurance.
  • Strong process discipline.  Establishes priorities, anticipates problems, determines completion dates, knows and communicates the status of assignments; manages time; uses the services of others effectively.
  • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation; ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Strong level of technical underwriting expertise with regards to wording, regulatory environment and financial analysis

Other e.g. language skills, driving capabilities etc
  • Business level English
